STEPHEN LAWRENCE DAY FOUNDATION
On April 22, 1993 at the age of just 18, Stephen Lawrence was murdered in Southeast London in an unprovoked racist attack. After the initial police investigation, five suspects were arrested but not convicted. A public inquiry into the handling of Stephen’s case was held in 1998, and led profound cultural changes in attitudes to racism, to the law and to police practice.
Stephen Lawrence Day was first celebrated in 2019 and takes place annually on 22 April, the date of Stephen’s death. The Day is marked officially in the British calendar as a celebration of Stephen’s life and legacy.
The Foundation, was established amid unprecedented growing global awareness of racial inequality, exists to inspire a more equal, inclusive society, and to foster opportunities for marginalized young people in the UK.
