Kate's bandana design draws on her background growing up in Maine, in a family of Lobstermen, intrinsically linked to the ecosystem, the mythology, and the ebb and flow of the ocean. From the central image of the lifecycle of the whale, to the mermaids that reference old ship figureheads, "Due North" tells a story of the sea that encapsulates not only the beauty, but also the gritty reality of the ocean.

Kate sets the story of this bandana in an ocean of nautical greens and blues, contrasted with the deep orange of a late-season sunset. She juxtaposes and balances each layered element mirroring the interplay of life above and below the water. All of it sits under a blanket of stars and a trusty compass, leading the way to "Due North."

KATE LIBBY

Born and raised on the coast of Maine, Kate's designs are deeply inspired by maritime lifestyle of Maine's working waterfronts. Her father and brothers are all Lobstermen, and growing up around that world imbues her work with what she calls the "simple grittiness" and "salt-of-earth" nature of the people that are called to to sea. It was actually her aunt (also named Kate Libby) that showed Kate her love for painting and inspired her to pursue art school and ultimately a career in design. After college, Kate honed her skills in multiple kitchens and a printshop in Washington, D.C., before eventually moving back to the Northeast to set out on her own. Since then, she's built an impressive portfolio including branding and design work for YETI, Iconic Arizona, and Milwaukee Summerfest, among others. When she's not designing, you're likely to find Kate with her family, out on a boat.



 

 

 


GULF OF MAINE RESEARCH INSTITUTE

The Gulf of Maine Research Institute (GMRI) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the resilience of the Gulf of Maine ecosystem and the communities that depend on it. They support solutions that will broadly benefit the bioregion, and serve as testbed for adaptation to environmental change. GMRI is now on the map for world-class ocean research and cutting-edge science education. They're providing catalytic leadership for communities at the frontiers of a rapidly changing ocean.

Kate chose to support this organization not only because her father fishes right near the institute, but also specifically for their track record of considering the needs of, and working hand-in-hand with, the local fishing community in their research. GMRI leverages the institutional knowledge of this community in building solutions to protect the ecosystem of the Gulf.
