When brainstorming ideas for her design, Alina told us that she's always wanted to visit a coastal desert like Baja, California (which is, consequently, her next planned trip). Her "Surfing Through Sands" design imagines the feeling of seeing (and surfing) a coastal location where the ocean meets the desert. With coyotes and cacti juxtaposed against swaying palm trees, Alina's design feels dream-like, but also rooted in the natural world at the same time.

Like much of Alina's beautiful work, "Surfing Through Sands" expertly blends natural tones and vintage elements with a laid-back, sun-drenched sensibility. It effortlessly evokes the feeling of a perfect California day filled with surf, sun, sand, and everything in between. As she puts it, "It just feels like the perfect combo to me—wild, raw, and free."

Alina Carballo

Alina Carballo is a brand designer and artist based in sunny Santa Monica, California. Born in Russia, she'd been creative for as long as she can remember. As she told us, "I started drawing when I was young and got into design by making memes of my friends in Photoshop—just messing around and having fun with it." That "messing around" eventually led her to study graphic design, where she earned her degree before leaving Russia at 20. From there, her travels took her to stops in Bali and Central and South America, and ultimately to Southern Califonria. When asked about what inspires her as an artist, Alina told us, "Nature is definitely my number one inspiration—it has so many layers, from the way different landscapes create their own unique vibe to the colors, shapes, and even the animals that belong to each place. I love how every environment tells its own story." She is also heavily influenced by vintage design, from packaging to classic cars. Blending these elements of organic beauty and nostalgia gives Alina's work it's unique look and feel. When she's not designing for your next favorite brand, you can usually find Alina outside surfing or skateboarding in the California sunshine. As she explains, "being in nature keeps me grounded and inspired, and I find that my best ideas often come to me when I'm out in the world, experiencing everything it has to offer."

Surfers Not Street Children

Surfers Not Street Children is a world renowned organization that empowers street children and children at risk in South Africa and Mozambique.

The Surfers Not Street Children model fuses surfing, mentorship and care. The Organization has dedicated local teams that include social workers, carers, lifeguards, surf coaches and administrators. Many children empowered by Surfers Not Street Children have transformed their lives. Some have gone from ‘street children’ to becoming coffee baristas, lifesavers, surf shop staff, restauranteurs, surf coaches and even pro surfers.

Alina chose Surfers Not Street Children because, in her words, "Surfing can be life-changing—it’s like meditation, bringing focus, confidence, and a sense of freedom. This organization uses surfing as a tool to empower kids, giving them a safe space, mentorship, and opportunities to build a better future. I love that it helps them gain independence, whether through becoming surf coaches, lifeguards, or just finding the confidence to chase new opportunities. It’s amazing how something as simple as riding a wave can transform lives."
